Electronic door locks have typically been used on cars. However, with an increase in security concerns for homes and businesses, electronic door locks are now used for many applications. The worry of losing keys can now be eliminated with the technology of electronic door locks.

Electronic door locks are used to replace traditional key locks with automation features. Electric door locks operate with the assistance of an electrical current. Electronic door locks work using two methods: electromagnetic or motor. The electrical impulse used to control the motor or magnet can be triggered in one of three ways:

  • An electronic card reader
  • Keypad
  • Wireless remote control sensor

A Wide Variety of Choices 

There are several variations of electronic door locks to satisfy most security requirements.

Coded-Entry electronic locks involve the use of a keypad located above the doorknob. An access code is entered to unlock the door. The code can be a combination of numbers or letters. When a sequence of characters and/or numbers is entered, the computer attached to the lock will compare it to what was stored in its memory. Different codes can be used for different doors or a master code assigned that works for all doors. 

Biometric locks store an image of your fingerprint.  A small computer with a scanner installed on the lock compares the fingerprint to what is stored; if it matches, a release signal will be sent to the lock. 

Biometric locks can now use more than fingerprints to identify authorized entry. Biometric readings can also include:

  • Retinal and Iris Scans of the eye
  • Facial recognition
  • Voiceprint recognition

Key fobs contain a microchip with a unique frequency that communicates with the reader to lock or unlock the door.  When the key fob is within proximity to the reader, the system unlocks the door to authorized users. Key fobs are small enough to be kept on a key ring or in a pocket. 

Key fobs can be programmed to allow levels of access for different uses for private residences. Access can be granted to babysitters or service providers. Other places that use key fobs include:

  • Gated communities
  • Apartment complexes
  • Laboratories
  • Restricted areas in office buildings
  • Stock rooms
  • Neighborhood Facilities
  • School campuses

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips are small devices with information stored on it that can be read by an RFID reader to allow entry.  A door can be unlocked from a farther distance. RFID access helps identify the location of personnel and can be set to open certain doors. 

Remote access locks are the most convenient types of electronic door locks. They enhance the security of homes and businesses. A remote-access lock coordinates with home security systems and can be managed anywhere an internet connection is present. Other features allow users to remotely:

  • Check if the door is locked or unlocked
  • Allow entry for service providers
  • Pre-set lock and unlock times
  • Monitor security
